Overview
If you’re not a golfer and you switch to the golf channel and see Justin Rose putting, you’d think you were watching a weird sword fight about to take place. Justin turns his putter into a sword so that he can aim the ball perfectly. Pure genius! You’re gonna love this simple drill.
Steps
Step 1: Watch
Watch the video.
Step 2: Low Side Read
Once you’ve walked to the low side of the putt which is the best place to see and feel the break, return to the ball.
Step 3: Sword
Stand behind the ball to do your last bit of green-reading. Raise your putter up into the sword position (see image below). Aim the shaft from the ball to the “aim point”, which is your “aim line”. See the ball curving off the sword from the “entry line”. This gives you the linear read, and the non-linear (curve) read spelt out beautifully in your brain (you might like my Reading Greens Using Rulers Drill to train your brain to visually see the linear and non-linear read).
Step 4: Wipe Blood From The Sword
After you’ve read the green using your “sword”, wipe the blood off the sword with your hand (you’ll see a lot of pros doing this) to trigger your routine.
Step 5: Keep Score
A great way to keep score while practising your “slope reading” (green reading skills) is with the clockface putting drill.
