Overview
The Rory Mcilroy Hand Speed Drill will teach you to increase your hand speed which will increase your distance (and consistency). You’ll get your arms and hands moving down quicker from the top of the backswing. It will create a lot of “width” on the downswing.
Steps
Step 1: Watch
Watch the video below.
Step 2: Split Hands Drill
Take a normal stance.
Use your driver (so you can see how the shaft flexes during the drill).
Split your hands on the club (see image below). This “splitting of the hands” automatically gives you more width on the backswing.
Address the ball with your split hand grip (see image below).
Swing to the top (see image below).
The goal is to get as much speed as possible by the time the hands get in front of your legs, then slam the brakes on (see image below). Don’t let the club pass the front of your legs!
The mantra is “accelerate then stop”. By doing this you’ll learn how to accelerate then stop which is what all the top pros do.
The goal is to try and break the shaft because it flexes so much when you “stop”.
Step 3: Competitive Practice
Do 10 Rory Mcilroy Hand Speed Drills. If you’re doing this at home, use a mirror so you can see the correct positions.
