Pete Cowen Resistance Band Drill: Keep Your Legs Stable
Your drill at a glance

Explore more ways to practise in the Golf Practice Made Fun App.
Give your legs feedback as you turn. A band above the knees helps you rehearse a coiling backswing with less unnecessary sideways movement.
Start with positioning the band, practise your posture, then coil and reset.
Watch the Drill.
Use a light, undamaged loop band and leave room for the club. This version uses slow rehearsals without hitting a ball. Keep the movement comfortable; stop if it hurts. The instructions describe a right-handed golfer; reverse the sides if you play left-handed.
Step 1. Position the Band
| Action | What to do |
|---|---|
| Place the loop | Position the band around both thighs, above the knees. |
| Choose its angle | Keep it level, or raise the right side slightly as shown in the demonstration. |
Step 2. Find Your Posture
| Action | What to do |
|---|---|
| Hinge from the hips | Take your golf posture and soften your knees. |
| Feel the ground | Establish comfortable, supported leg positions before moving the club. |
Step 3. Coil and Reset
| Action | What to do |
|---|---|
| Turn back | Rehearse your backswing and feel the band stretch as you hold your leg positions. |
| Stay stable | Turn up and around rather than sliding sideways. |
| Return and reset | Come back slowly. Count each backswing, return and reset as one attempt. |
Your 18-Rehearsal Challenge.
Our practice format: complete two sets of nine attempts, resting between sets. Keep the same setup and pace so the second set gives you a useful comparison. Every rehearsal counts towards your eighteen attempts.
| Score | When to award it |
|---|---|
| 1 point | You complete the backswing, return and reset under control, keeping your leg positions stable. |
| 0 points | You slide sideways, lose balance or rush the reset. |
Record one total out of 18. After the first nine, choose one cue to carry into the second set. Aim to repeat the routine rather than stretch the band harder.
George’s Practice Tip.

Use one cue for the set: “coil, don’t slide”. After each rehearsal, pause long enough to reset before you start again. At the halfway point, write down one thing that made the movement easier to repeat. Keep that cue for the second nine instead of changing several things at once.
