Feel the Strike. Keep Moving Through.
Your practice at a glance
These golf drills are from the Golf Practice Made Fun App.
A more solid strike starts with a golf impact position you can explore without forcing a frozen pose.
Begin with the Golf Impact Bag Drill to notice controlled contact, use the Clap Hand Impact Drill to connect a gentle body turn with your returning arm, then try the Smelly Socks Impact Drill to move through from a still start. Keep each exercise small and comfortable, follow its eighteen-attempt format and let your normal swings continue through to a balanced finish.
Drill 1. Golf Impact Bag: Rehearse a Controlled Strike

A soft bag gives the club a clear contact point while a small motion gives you time to notice balance and how your body and arms arrive. Moving the bag aside afterwards helps you explore the feeling in a normal swing that continues through impact.
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Use a purpose-made soft golf impact bag, filled and positioned according to its instructions. Set it where your iron would meet the ball, on a stable surface with clear space for the club. Take a comfortable stance and your normal grip. |
| 2 | Make a short backswing, beginning below waist height. Add a small body turn as the club meets the bag gently, then pause and reset. Explore a modest handle-ahead feeling with the iron without forcing your hands far forwards or trying to move the bag as far as possible. |
| 3 | Complete nine gentle bag rehearsals. Move the bag completely out of the swing path, then make nine normal iron rehearsals or easy range shots. Allow those normal swings to continue into a balanced finish. Indoors, use no-ball rehearsals with enough clear space. |
Drill 2. Clap Hand Impact: Turn and Meet Your Lead Palm

Your lead palm becomes a simple reference for the returning hand. The gentle clap gives you an obvious contact point, helping you explore body-and-arm coordination without a club, a ball or a long list of swing thoughts.
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Stand as though addressing an iron shot, without a club. Hinge comfortably from your hips, soften your knees and bring your palms together around your normal hand position at address. |
| 2 | Leave the lead hand low in front of you as a relaxed contact point. Turn back and raise the trail hand through a comfortable range. For a right-handed golfer, the lead hand is the left hand; reverse the roles for a left-handed swing. |
| 3 | Turn gently towards the target and let pressure move onto your lead leg. Return the trail palm to the lead palm with a light clap, pause to notice balance, then reset. Complete eighteen routines in two sets of nine. Keep the knees and lead elbow soft rather than chasing a loud clap. |
Drill 3. Smelly Socks Impact: Start Still and Push Through

Removing the backswing makes the task simple: move the sock towards one clear target and hold a short finish. It offers feedback about this gentle forward movement, while keeping the focus on direction rather than distance. The sock’s flight does not diagnose your normal golf-ball impact.
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Roll a sock into a small, soft ball. Place it on a practice mat or suitable surface and set your short iron behind it as though addressing a golf ball. Pick a target in a clear area, allowing room for the club and the flying sock. |
| 2 | Pause at address, then move the club straight forward through the sock without a backswing. Let your body turn with the movement and extend your arms into a short punch-shot finish. Keep the movement gentle and hold the finish. |
| 3 | Watch where the sock starts, then reset it in the same place. Complete eighteen pushes in two sets of nine, using the same target. Count one point when the sock starts towards that target. Afterwards, return to your normal swing rather than trying to push a golf ball in the same way. |
