Below are six examples of how your conscious brain can GATE CRASH your golf routine:
Gate Crash 1: Delay
If you delay, even for a second during the routine, it can only mean that your conscious brain has gatecrashed your routine.
Gate Crash 2: Alignment
If you’re going through your routine, and for a split second aren’t sure about your alignment, it can only mean that your conscious brain has gatecrashed your routine.
Gate Crash 3: Target
If you lose awareness of the target, it can only mean that your conscious brain has gatecrashed your routine.
Gate Crash 4: Technical
If you start thinking about the technique, it can only mean that your conscious brain has gatecrashed your routine.
Gate Crash 5: Hard Gaze
If you gaze intensely at the target, it can only mean that your conscious brain has gatecrashed your routine. Soften your gaze to a 3 out of 10. A soft gaze allows your subconscious in. A hard gaze means you’re trying too hard, which allows your conscious mind to wreak havoc.
Gate Crash 6: High Expectations
If you’re like most golfers, you’re a high achiever. You expect good results in your life. But “expectations” on the course is fatal. You have to feel indifferent. When Jack Nicklaus misses a put (even a short one), he silently says to himself, “Eh, so what.” He’s not bothered about the result at all. He’s only bothered about whether he nailed his routine. After all, that’s the only thing he has control over. The result is completely out of his control, so he doesn’t waste a second worrying about it.
Step 3. Keep Score
Hit 10 balls. Give yourself one point for every time you remember to do your full routine and didn’t gate crash your conscious brain. Perfecting your routine bubble is not easy. That is why it’s crucial to practice your routine on every shot you take on the practice ground.
