DRILL OVERVIEW
Headcover anti-slice rehearsal
Your drill at a glance

This drill is from the Golf Practice Made Easy App.
Use a soft headcover as a simple reference for the club’s path through impact. Start with slow rehearsals and plenty of clearance, then hit controlled half-shots without touching the headcover.
Watch the headcover drill demonstration
Watch Steve Furlonger’s headcover drill demonstration, also linked on Long Game card 122 in the App. Then follow the three practice steps below, starting with slow rehearsals and plenty of clearance.
Step 1. Set the headcover
What to do
| Action | What to do |
|---|---|
| Choose a clear target line | Select a target and imagine a line running through the ball towards it. Use a short iron and a normal, comfortable stance. |
| Place the soft headcover | Put the headcover inside-left of the ball, on the side nearer your feet, matching the video. Leave generous space for the club to pass. Use a soft headcover without a hard insert. |
Step 2. Rehearse slowly
Make easy practice swings. Move the headcover farther away if the club touches it.
What to do
| Action | What to do |
|---|---|
| Rehearse without a ball | Make a few slow half-swings through the intended ball position. Move the headcover farther away if the club touches it or you feel you need to make an awkward movement to miss it. |
| Add a ball | Hit gentle, controlled half-shots. Swing through the ball with a smooth body turn and let the headcover give feedback about clearance. |
| Reset between shots | Check the headcover has not moved. Keep the same club, target and comfortable swing size for the scoring round. |
Quick practice checks
| Watch for | Try this |
|---|---|
| The club catches the headcover | Pause and move the headcover farther away. Rehearse slowly before adding another ball. |
| You exaggerate an in-to-out swing | Return to a smaller, natural half-swing. The marker is feedback, rather than a reason to push the club out towards the target. |
| You miss the marker but still slice | A slice also involves the clubface relative to the path. Record the ball flight and review your grip and face control separately. |
| You speed up and lose contact | Shorten the swing and restore an easy tempo. Build speed only after the rehearsal feels comfortable. |
Step 3. Score 18 shots
Hit 18 controlled half-shots in two sets of nine. Score one point for each clean strike that misses the headcover.
Reset between shots and keep the same club and comfortable swing size. Record your successful shots out of 18 and one useful practice note.
In the Golf Practice Made Easy App, tick one box under Score your practice for each completed shot. Record successful shots separately. The eighteen-shot round is our App practice format.
George’s Conclusion

Start with room to swing, then use the headcover to make your rehearsal more purposeful. A higher score shows that you are combining contact and clearance more consistently. Compare the ball flight as well: avoiding the marker alone does not prove that a slice has been fixed.
For a different marker-based rehearsal, try the Anti Slice Downswing Drill.
