Choose the Flight. Watch the Result. Build Options.
Your practice at a glance
These golf drills are from the Golf Practice Made Fun App.
More control over wedge ball flight gives you more ways to match a shot to the landing area and the roll you need.
Begin with Freddie Couples’ Weak Left Hand Wedge Drill to explore a high, soft pitch, then try the Wedge Nine Ball Flights Drill to vary height and shape towards one target. Play eighteen attempts in each drill, resetting and choosing the intended shot before every swing. The nine-flight challenge is demanding: use unscored practice to explore one flight at a time before working through the full set.
Drill 1. Freddie Couples: Explore a High, Soft Pitch

Freddie Couples’ Weak Left Hand Wedge Drill helps you explore a higher, softer pitch when you want the ball to land with less rollout.
Testing a small lead-hand adjustment from the same lie and distance makes it easier to notice its effect on height, contact and finishing distance. Keep the change comfortable and let the wedge’s loft provide the height. Use the result to decide whether this setup gives you a useful option alongside your normal pitch.
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Take your usual wedge setup and grip. Following Freddie’s demonstration, turn your lead hand slightly towards the target around the grip. “Weak” describes its position, not a loose hold. For a right-handed golfer this is the left hand; left-handed golfers use the right. |
| 2 | Set up about forty yards from a practice hole, choosing a suitable lie and landing spot. Rehearse a comfortable short swing with the adjusted grip, then let the club swing through the ball to a balanced finish. Avoid trying to scoop the ball into the air. |
| 3 | Play eighteen pitches in two sets of nine, keeping the wedge, lie and target consistent. Watch the flight and where the ball finishes. The original drill’s success target is within nine feet of the hole, including a holed shot. Reduce the grip change if it feels uncomfortable or harms contact. |

Drill 2. Nine Ball Flights: Choose Height and Shape Before You Swing

The Wedge Nine Ball Flights Drill builds your repertoire by challenging you to choose and produce different heights and shot shapes with one wedge.
Calling the flight before the swing turns each ball into a clear task. Comparing low, mid and high shots against your normal trajectory helps you recognise the options you can repeat. Watch the curve through the air, since a ball starting left or right does not by itself show a draw or fade.
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Choose a clear target between thirty and 120 yards and one suitable wedge. Use a distance where you can swing comfortably and see the ball clearly. Hit a few unscored warm-up shots to establish your normal flight, then keep the club, lie and target consistent. |
| 2 | Play these nine combinations once each: low draw, low straight, low fade; mid draw, mid straight, mid fade; high draw, high straight, high fade. Name the intended height and shape before each attempt, using the demonstration to guide your practice. |
| 3 | Repeat the same nine combinations once for eighteen shots in total. Judge each attempt against the flight you called: both height and shape should match. For a right-handed golfer a draw curves right to left and a fade left to right; reverse the directions for a left-handed golfer. If the curve is unclear, note that rather than guessing. |
