“Everybody can see that my swing is homegrown. That means everybody has a chance to do it.” That’s what Bubba Watson has to say about his swing. His swing may be homegrown and unorthodox, but he’s one of the longest drivers on the PGA tour for a good reason. Buckle up. You’re about to discover the top-secret Bubba Watson jump that will unleash power, and cause your playing partners to think you’ve been sneaking off to the gym instead of watching Netflix.
“98% of golfers want more power. Yeah, I don’t understand that remaining 2%, either.” – George Watts
I added the Bubba Watson Jumping Drill to the Golf Practice Planner today because I just love a good power drill, and this is one of the best.
After doing some research on how Bubba Watson is able to hit the ball so far, I found the Bubba Watson Jumping Drill.
It’s a lot of fun. You’ll feel an amazing sense of freedom and your brain will be utterly devoid of swing thoughts, which is the key to great golf. The good news is that you can do this drill from the comfort of your living room on a rainy day.
In this drill you’re obviously going to learn a “power move”, but you’ll also learn how to start the downswing without thinking about it. It’ll be a little weird at first, but you’re going to love the way that this drill unlocks the natural athlete that lurks within you.
I promise that you’re going to have a lot of fun swinging like Bubba! And I think this drill will quickly become one of your favourites.
“When I got my tour card I cried. When I got my first win – and my first paycheck – I cried. All these things make me cry.” – Bubba Watson
Yes, he hits the ball a long way.
Yes, he is entertaining to watch.
Yes, he’s won a few green jackets.
But it is his ability to cry in public that makes me a true fan of Bubba’s.
Being a Yoga teacher, I love it when the stereotypical male image is challenged. Men aren’t meant to cry was the damaging rallying cry of the nineties and naughties. Thankfully, a new cry can be heard…the male cry. And Bubba is leading the way! When he retires from golf, one of his great legacies will be paving the way for men to put down their tough exterior, and welcome vulnerability as a friend, not as an enemy.
Here’s one more Bubba quote before you start the drill…
“I am uncomfortable with heights, I’m scared of the dark and I am scared of big crowds.” – Bubba Watson

Steps
Step 1: Watch
Watch the video.
Step 2: Jump Without A Club
Take your address position without a club. Jump. Notice what happens. Your knees “naturally” moved down to unleash the jump. To jump up, you had to go down first. You’re going to do the exact same thing in this drill.
Step 3: Jump With A Club
Take your address position with a club. Swing. Jump, like Bubba Watson, as you make contact with the ball. Finish like Bubba, with your toes pointing at the target. It’s hard to do. Persevere. The payoff is worth it!
Step 4: Jump Feeling
Hit a ball with the “jump feeling”, but don’t jump.
Step 5: Keep Score
Do 10 Bubba jump swings (step 3). Give yourself one point each time you perform the jump correctly, and manage to hit the ball.
