Watch the first bounce, then learn how your ball reacts on the green. This Rory McIlroy one-hop stop chip drill turns his short-game demonstration into a focused landing-and-finish practice task.

The shot comes from Rory’s TaylorMade one-hop-stop lesson. Our landing patch, target zone and 18-shot scoring are a practice adaptation, rather than a routine prescribed by Rory.

Step 1. Watch Rory and choose a suitable lie

Watch firstUse Rory’s demonstration below to study his setup, the short swing and the reaction of the ball.
Set up for the shot

Choose a clean greenside lie. Set up close (vertical shaft). Feet square (vs open). Club face slightly open. Weight slightly on lead foot.

Prepare the feedbackChoose one wedge and use the same type of ball throughout the session.

Step 2. Practise the landing and observe the bounce

ActionWhat to do
Pick a landing patchIdentify a small patch on the putting surface, clear of the fringe.
Play a controlled chipUse the demonstration as your reference. Start with a small motion you can repeat.
Watch two thingsNotice the first bounce, then the distance the ball travels before stopping. Compare the result with your intention.

Step 3. Play 18 chips to a finish zone

Step 3: play eighteen chips, aiming for a finish zone around the hole, with the right heel slightly raised in the follow-through.
ActionWhat to do
Choose a finish zoneMark an imaginary circle around the hole with a radius of roughly a putter-length, keeping markers outside the ball’s route.
Play two sets of nineUse one clean lie for the first nine. Pause to review the pattern, then play nine more from the same spot.
Keep one simple scoreAward one point for each ball that stops inside the circle, including a holed chip. Add the points for a total out of eighteen.

Our practice format: eighteen attempts in two sets of nine.

ScoreWhen to award it
1 pointThe ball finishes inside your chosen target circle, including a holed chip.
0 pointsThe ball finishes outside the circle.

The name describes Rory’s demonstration, rather than a promise that every ball will stop after one hop. Your lie, ball, wedge and the firmness of the green affect the reaction. Use this session to find the carry and rollout you can repeat with your own equipment.

George’s Practice Tip.

George, scratch golfer and creator of the Golf Practice Made Fun App.

Begin with contact and a predictable landing. If the ball keeps rolling beyond the zone, record that pattern and choose a landing patch that suits it. A repeatable result is more useful than trying to force a spectacular stop.
