Step 2: Tummy Button Up Drill
Set-up: Address the ball making sure your centre of gravity is on top of or even “left” of the ball. This will ensure your divot comes “after the golf ball”. In this position it doesn’t matter if you use a lot of wrists or no wrists, the shaft will always come back to a straight line underneath your sternum (eliminating any need for manipulations).
Follow-through: On the follow-through try to get your tummy button and chest out in front of you and most importantly “up” as well (see images below). Make sure your belly button is pointing above the pin. This will allow the handle of the club to come “up and left”, which is great for swallowing out the impact zone.
It will feel weird to you because like most amateurs you almost certainly stay too low on the follow-through, ploughing the handle down and forward which causes the horrible diggy duffs and thins.
Your new chipping mantra should be:
“Belly button up and left.”
You need to exaggerate the “up and left” move.
Step 3: Competitive Practice
Do 10 Tummy Button Up shots gripping all the way up the grip.
Do 10 Tummy Button Up shots gripping halfway up the grip.
Do 10 Tummy Button Up shots gripping near to the metal.
The further you grip up the club the further the ball will go. Experiment with the three different grip placements, and notice the changes in distance.
