WALTER HAGEN PRINTABLE WALL ART
Dear fellow golfer,
My name is George Watts. I’m an artist, the creator of the Golf Drills Practice Planner, an artist, and a yoga teacher. I had a bit of fun with these nine paintings of one of my boyhood heroes, Walter Hagen.
This artwork is of Walter Hagen teeing off from the roof of the Savoy in London, his home away from home, in 1923. The ball ended up in the Thames river.
Walter Hagen (December 21, 1892 – October 6, 1969) was an American professional golfer and a major figure in golf in the first half of the 20th century. His tally of 11 professional majors is third behind Jack Nicklaus (18) and Tiger Woods (15). Known as the “father of professional golf,” he brought publicity, prestige, big prize money, and lucrative endorsements to the sport. Hagen is rated one of the greatest golfers ever.
“I set up shots the way a movie director sets up scenes. I hooked and I sliced them into the rough off the fairways, but how I clobbered that little white ball when the chips were down, the gallery tense and my opponent either overconfident and/or sick with apprehension.” – Walter Hagen
Hagen’s antics helped popularise golf, and if he changed into his tuxedo on the way to the course so his opponents thought he had been out all night or made a grand show of drinking scotch that was actually iced tea in a highball glass, the fans who showed up in droves to see what he would do next were none the wiser.
In his autobiography, Hagen wrote: “It pleased the public to think I lived the easy, carefree life, the playboy of golf. Frankly, I was happy to support both those illusions since I was making money out of the showmanship.”
