DRILL OVERVIEW · PUTTING CARD 36
Coin on the Face: Find the Sweet Spot
Your drill at a glance

Find the centre. Notice the start. Coin on the Face: Find the Sweet Spot is Putting Card 36 in the Golf Practice Made Fun App.
Give yourself a small target on the putter face. Secure a coin to the centre of the striking face with removable tape, then roll short putts. Pay attention to contact and watch how the ball starts after centred and off-centre strikes.
Play 18 attempts and score one point for each centred strike. Remove the coin and tape when you finish the practice session.
Jump to attach the coin, roll short putts or score centred strikes.
Watch the coin putting lesson.
Back 2 Basics Golf demonstrates the coin drill using a coin secured to the centre of the putter face. Watch the setup and the contact feedback before trying it yourself.
Step 1. Attach the coin.
Fix a small coin to the centre of the putter’s striking face using removable tape.

| Action | What to do |
|---|---|
| Choose a small coin | Use a coin that fits fully within the height of your putter face. |
| Find the centre | Locate the middle of the flat face that strikes the ball. |
| Attach the coin | Use removable tape to secure the coin in that central position. The coin goes on the striking face. |
| Check the setup | Make sure the coin is held securely before placing the putter behind the ball. |
The close-up above shows the placement. Keep the coin centred so it gives you a consistent contact target.
Step 2. Roll short putts.
Make your normal short putting stroke and notice both the strike and the ball’s starting direction.

| Action | What to do |
|---|---|
| Choose a short putt | Set up on the practice green with a clear target. |
| Use your normal grip | Take your usual stance and grip, setting the putter behind the ball. |
| Roll the ball | Make a small, smooth stroke and pay attention to contact. |
| Watch the start | Observe the ball’s initial direction after each strike. |
| Compare the feedback | Notice how the ball starts after centred and off-centre contact. Reset before the next attempt. |
Keep the putt short enough that you can give your attention to the strike. One ball is enough to complete the practice session.
Step 3. Score centred strikes.
Count one point per centred strike, record your total out of 18 and remove the coin when finished.

| Action | What to do |
|---|---|
| Complete 18 attempts | Return to your starting spot and continue until you have played 18 putts. |
| Score the contact | Award one point for each centred strike. An off-centre strike earns no point. |
| Keep a running total | Record your centred-strike score as you go, then add the total out of 18. |
| Note the starting direction | Keep a brief observation about what you noticed after centred and off-centre contact. |
| Remove the coin | Take off the coin and removable tape when you finish. |
Your practice record
| Part of the practice session | Record |
|---|---|
| Attempts completed | ___ / 18 |
| Centred-strike score | ___ / 18 |
| Starting direction | What I noticed after centred and off-centre contact: ___ |
| Next practice session | One thing to repeat or explore: ___ |
Score the strike. A centred strike earns one point whether the ball goes in or misses. Record your total out of 18; higher is better.
George’s Practice Tip.

Keep the stroke small and give yourself a moment to notice the contact before putting again. A clear observation is more useful than rushing through all 18.
After the practice session, record your score and one sentence about starting direction. Remove the coin and keep that observation in mind next time you practise.
For another contact comparison, try Lead-Hand Putting. To explore how the stroke begins, use Hover or Ground.
