This is Long Game card 92 in the Golf Practice Made Fun App.

A headwind can tempt you to swing harder. This drill gives you a different task: use a shorter, smoother iron swing and send the ball through a chosen low window. Grip down, make a modest setup adjustment and keep turning through to a lower finish.

The aim is repeatable flight control, rather than maximum distance. Notice carry and rollout as well as height; a lower shot still needs a sensible target and somewhere to finish.

Step 1. Set up for a low flight.

Grip down a short iron, position the ball slightly back of centre and favour the lead foot.
ActionWhat to do
Choose your targetPick a clear target into the wind on a suitable practice range. Imagine a low window along that target line, using a distant background feature to judge the height. The window is a visual reference, not an obstacle to place in front of you.
Grip downHold the short iron a little lower on the grip than usual, leaving some handle above your top hand. Keep enough room to swing comfortably.
Adjust the setupPlay the ball slightly back of centre and favour your lead foot. Keep the change modest: avoid moving it all the way back by your trail foot or leaning excessively towards the target.

Choose a window you can judge consistently from your practice station. Keep the same club, target and window for all 18 scored shots.

Step 2. Swing shorter and smoother.

A controlled short-iron strike with hands ahead through contact and a low initial flight.
ActionWhat to do
Rehearse the shorter swingMake a few comfortable practice swings with less backswing than your normal full shot. Keep your chest turning through instead of making a short backswing followed by a sudden hit.
Keep the pace smoothHit controlled shots without trying to overpower the wind. Let the shorter motion set the effort level.
Keep your hands aheadUse the card’s hands-ahead feel through contact, allowing your body to turn. Avoid trying to hold the wrists rigid or dragging the handle as far forwards as possible.
Watch the flightCheck whether the ball starts through your chosen window. Note contact and direction before preparing the next ball.

Quick practice checks

What happensWhat to try
The ball climbs too highReturn to a shorter, smoother swing. Recheck the ball position and the quality of your strike before making a bigger adjustment.
You thin or top the ballMake the setup less exaggerated. Restore a comfortable posture and a controlled swing that produces clean contact.
You hit harder into the windPause and rehearse your original pace. The challenge is to control the flight, rather than win a contest with the weather.
You stop turning after contactLet your chest continue towards the target. A low finish should still be balanced and flowing.

Step 3. Finish low and score.

Low follow-through with a shallow shot through an imaginary flight window, against blue headwind arrows.

Finish with the club lower than in your normal full swing, without forcing it to stop abruptly. Hold a balanced finish long enough to watch the ball.

Play two sets of nine shots. Keep the same low window and add your points for one total out of 18.

ScoreWhen to award it
1 pointThe ball flies through your chosen low window.
0 pointsThe ball goes above or outside the window, or does not fly through it.

Record a note about contact, carry and where the ball finished. A shot can meet the height test yet still miss your intended landing area, so the score is only one part of the feedback.

In the Golf Practice Made Easy App, open card 92 from My Cards, choose Score your practice, enter your total and select Save result. Your result opens in My Progress → Your scored results. Compare attempts using the same club and setup, and note changes in wind strength.

George’s Practice Tip.

George, creator of the Golf Practice Made Fun App.

Give yourself one clear task for the set: “shorter and smoother”. Watch the flight before deciding what to change. If the first few shots are untidy, reduce the swing and find clean contact again. Once you can repeat the flight, learn how far it carries with that club rather than assuming it will travel your normal full-shot distance.

For a related low-flight practice task, try the Nick Faldo Low Scope Fade Drill. To work on the strike itself, use the Towel-Behind-Ball Drill.
