Metronome Putting: set a comfortable beat, rehearse nine strokes, then roll nine putts for 18 completed attempts.

This is Putting card sixteen, Metronome Putting: Find a Steady Rhythm, in the Golf Practice Made Fun App.

Give your putting stroke a steady beat to follow. Start with nine rehearsals, then roll nine putts using the same comfortable rhythm. Record the 18 attempts you complete and note how smoothly you move the putter and judge the pace.

A metronome app on your phone works well. Start around 60 beats per minute, choosing a beat that feels unhurried. Adjust the length of your stroke for distance rather than rushing the forward movement.

Jump to set the beat, rehearse nine strokes or roll nine putts.

Watch the metronome putting lesson.

JJ Putting demonstrates using a metronome and stroke-length references to practise a consistent tempo. Watch how the beat stays steady as the stroke length changes.

Set the metronomeUse a metronome or metronome app. Start around 60 beats per minute.
Listen before movingLet a few beats play, then settle into a comfortable putting stance.
Keep it unhurriedChoose a steady beat you can follow without snatching the putter. Keep the same comfortable rhythm for the rehearsals and putts.

Place your phone safely to the side, where you can hear it without putting it in the ball’s path.

Step 2. Rehearse nine strokes.

Step 2: start back on one beat, move forwards on the next and make nine unhurried practice strokes.
ActionWhat to do
Rehearse without a ballMake a practice putting stroke with no ball in the way.
Start back on a beatBegin the backswing on one metronome beat.
Move forwards on the nextLet the putter move forwards on the following beat. Keep the movement flowing and unhurried.
Complete nine rehearsalsRepeat until you have made nine practice strokes. Count each completed rehearsal once.

Notice whether you can follow the beat smoothly. Avoid adding a sudden burst of speed as the putter moves forwards.

Step 3. Roll nine putts and complete your round.

Step 3: roll nine putts with the same rhythm, use stroke length for distance, and record nine rehearsals plus nine putts as 18 attempts.
ActionWhat to do
Add the ballSet the putter face behind the ball, aimed along your chosen start line.
Keep the same rhythmRoll nine putts using the beat you practised during the rehearsals.
Use stroke length for distanceAdjust how far the putter travels rather than rushing the forward stroke.
Record completed attemptsAdd your nine rehearsals and nine putts. A full round is 18 completed attempts.
Note the feel and paceWrite down whether the strokes felt smoother and whether your pace improved. Keep this observation separate from the completion total.

George’s Practice Tip.

George at the practice range.

Listen to a few beats before you begin, then let the putter join in. Keep the volume low: the golfer next to you probably didn’t book a drum lesson.
