Step 1: Pick A Distance
To find your favourite “wedge distance”, you can go to a golf range, but using your own balls is ideal, so you can pace off distances and track your spread of shots.

Pick several target distances from 30 to 120 yards (e.g. 50, 70, and 90 yards). Walk the distances off and place a cone at each distance (or if you’re on a public range and have a rangefinder, use that instead).

Step 2: Keep Score
Hit 10 balls from each selected distance (e.g. 50, 70, and 90 yards).

You get a birdie for each shot that finishes within three wedge club lengths of the target (approximately 9 feet). You get par for any shot that finishes outside of 9 feet.

Track how many under you get for the 10 shots.

Keep changing the distances until you find your favourite yardage (you consistently score well for that distance).

0 Points = Par for any shot that finishes outside of 9 feet.
1 Point = Birdie for each shot that finishes within three wedge club lengths of the flag.

The maximum score for 10 shots is 10 points.

Optional Step: Track the dispersal of each 10-shot game using a pencil and notepad. You’ll soon see a pattern (e.g. most shots finish 6 yards short right.).
